Bethlehem – An elderly farmer’s wife was stabbed with a knife or knives and then her throat was cut, a farm worker was murdered and a domestic worker seriously injured in an orgy of violence on a farm. If 79-year-old Kosie van Niekerk’s daughter-in-law Annatjie had not managed to escape from the murderers on Monday morning and call for help, more blood possibly would have flowed on Dankbaarheid farm. Police and farmers found the bodies of Van Niekerk and a farm worker, 42-year-old Elias Mokoena, in a shed about 100m from the houses of Van Niekerk and her son, Johannes. Partially-sighted Van Niekerk was found in a pool of blood in the shed. She had been stabbed with a knife or knives and her throat was slashed. Mokoena was found near her body, underneath a roll of wire and iron. He had been bound and possibly strangled or smothered. Domestic worker locked up, petrified The badly injured Christina Mokoena, 50, was lying outside the shed. She had been shot in the stomach and underwent an emergency operation on Monday afternoon. Another domestic worker, 46-year-old Selina Nzimande, was found locked in the bathroom of Mrs Van Niekerk’s house. She was petrified. On Monday, Van Niekerk’s son – a big, strong man – wept as people offered their condolences. “I hate my mother’s murderers. She was a vulnerable, blind old lady. No person does something like this.” A son of the wounded woman arrived on the farm on a bicycle and left sobbing after he’d been told what had happened. Detectives and other police found five men with the help of the farmers and arrested them. One was found on the farm, apparently hiding in the grass. The other four were found some distance from the farm. Sapareports that schoolchildren pointed out to police in which direction they had seen men running. A revolver stolen from another farm in the district was apparently found on one of the suspects. Another pistol was found and it is suspected that it, too, had been stolen. One of the suspects worked on the farm. The five are due to appear in court in Bethlehem on Wednesday on two counts of murder, attempted murder, the illegal possession of firearms and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
