Salvors are scrambling to remove 1,900 tonnes of fuel from a stricken bulk carrier off South Africa’s west coast as approaching foul weather dims hopes of saving the ship. The 150,000 ton Taiwanese-registered Cape Africa, which was transporting iron-ore from Brazil to Japan, started taking on water last week through a hole near its bow. It has grown to more than 20 metres high and between five to seven metres wide. The South African Marine Safety Authority says if any of its bulkheads collapse the ship will crash-dive and release the oil. The last major oil slick off South Africa’s west coast was in 2000 when thousands of penguins died and tens of thousands more were rescued from fuel leaking from the sunken bulk carrier Treasure. |
