S.Africa; R12m robbery: 3 Arrested
Port Elizabeth – Three men were arrested on Thursday in connection with the R12m robbery at the First National Bank (FNB) in Port Elizabeth on January 4, national police reported on Saturday.
Senior Superintendent Mary Martins-Engelbrecht said the suspects were being questioned by police in Pretoria. The men were arrested in Mamelodi and Midrand.
She said the men were believed to be members of a highly sophisticated international bank robbery syndicate.
“We are looking at the possibility that the three suspects we’ve arrested on Thursday might have been involved in other bank related crimes around the country.”
Police could not reveal any other information regarding the arrests at this stage, Martins-Engelbrecht said.
A security guard at the bank was held up and abducted.
The guard was eventually found by police on the side of a road in Seaview shortly after the incident.
The group men broke a bulletproof window to gain access to the bank, and destroyed security cameras and the alarm system to get to the money.
The robbers got to the strongroom where the money was kept through a hole they made in a wall protecting to the strongroom.
