Just back from a very different America…
I saw this message posted on a South African forum. The observations are
most interesting.

I arrived back in Europe yesterday, having left an America very different
from the one I arrived in on the 5th of September.
Although the USA is technically at war there is little overt evidence of the
fact.
I have heard that communities near to miltary bases have a heightened tension
as military preparations are made.
Everywhere one goes in the USA, one sees evidence of the depth of US
patriotism, the most obvious signs being the mushrooming of flags everywhere,
outside homes, outside businesses, in shops, flying from car radio aerials,
on the lapels of staid looking businessmen and women, on the shirts, blouses
and overalls of people. Some shops are giving out free flags to customers.
Every sports event opens with some kind of flag ceremony and the singing of
patriotic songs.
The most surprising thing is how GW seems to come into his own, his speeches,
though tough, have been delivered with restraint.
He has warned strongly against revenge attacks on Muslim Americans, and
although there have been a few such attacks there have been far fewer than
one might have expected.
GW is keeping a tight rein on those in his administration who are impatient
for immediate militayaction.
GW either is a far more competent individual than many thought him to be or
he just knows how to pick the best advisors. In either case he is doing a
good job.
