You never know. It might be true. People are suppressing the truth about the dangers of South Africa. Remember those German tourists who were robbed in the townships? Well, the South African Govt then later went through an exercise getting the Germans to put out positive stuff about S.Africa.
While the US Govt on their website (and other Govts) warn their citizens about the dangers of South Africa, it could be that the Govt in cahoots with tourist operators just push the positive.
I don’t know the source of the tourism figures so I can’t comment. So one does not know how much is truth and how much is exaggeration. I’ve seen nothing locally that indicates to me there is more tourism. I don’t know if people living at the coast have any comments.
What you will have seen in the whole CESA debacle is that Boshoff, the guy who is saying S.Africa is not so bad – is himself linked to the tourist industry. And it appears that the tourism sector will bend over backwards to suppress the reality of the country.
It could well be that tourists to this country are blatantly lied to about their safety. I’m quite convinced of this. Jan
