News Cafe’s Policy NOT to play Afrikaans Music!

WARNING: This is Version 1 of my old archive, so Photos will NOT work and many links will NOT work. But you can find articles by searching on the Titles. There is a lot of information in this archive. Use the SEARCH BAR at the top right. Prior to December 2012; I was a pro-Christian type of Conservative. I was unaware of the mass of Jewish lies in history, especially the lies regarding WW2 and Hitler. So in here you will find pro-Jewish and pro-Israel material. I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

[There are two sides to this story. The one is that yes, News Cafe does indeed have the right to choose what music it wants to play to its clientele. Perhaps Steve Hofmeyer’s hit song does not fit in with the type of music they play there and it may irritate people. But, given the amazing success and variety of Afrikaans music produced over the years, I find it hard to believe that a ban on everything Afrikaans is justified at all. I’m sure there must be lots of Afrikaans music that would fit in well with the music played at News Cafes. So, unless News Cafe can come up with good logical reasoning to back up this ban – I say, BOYCOTT THE F*CKERS and tell every person you know!! I’m sure there must by sympathetic english-speaking whites who will also boycott them. I agree with the english-speaker that Afrikaans music rocks and that Afrikaans musicians have done some excellent work in this country. This boils down to outright racism and snobbery on the part of News Cafe. I hope they get lots of bad publicity due to this! Jan]

They’re known for their hot coffees and cocktails, but the News Caf(233)é chain has become a hot topic with an apparent ban on Afrikaans treffers at the trendy venues.

The issue arose this week after Pretoria resident Toon Stern complained to Beeld newspaper about his request to have Steve Hofmeyr’s latest hit Pampoen played for his wife being turned down by the Zambezi branch manager.

Stern was allegedly informed that playing Afrikaans music was against News Caf(233)é policy, and that this was a general rule for all its branches countrywide.

Attempts to obtain comment from News Caf(233)é’s head office on Thursday were unsuccessful, as staff maintained that “all our directors are on leave until next week and there’s nobody available to speak on behalf of the company”.

‘I don’t know much about Afrikaans music, only that it so doesn’t go with our clientele’

The Star contacted several News Caf(233)é venues for comment, but managers referred all queries back to head office.

One manager, however, who asked not to be named, confirmed that Afrikaans music definitely did not feature on the play list.

“I don’t know anything much about Afrikaans music, only that it so doesn’t go with our clientele,” she said.

The Star understands that News Caf(233)é outlets start playing commercial music when they open at 11am.

This continues throughout the day until about 7pm, when more mellow tunes ranging from acid jazz to mild tempo are played until closing time.

The question of whether Steve Hofmeyr’s crooning about a “vrot pampoen en stukkende skoen (rotten pumpkin and broken shoe)” would feature in future at News Caf(233)és became a hot topic on Talk Radio 702 today as listeners called in with ranging opinions.

“I’m English, but I’m proud of the local Afrikaans music industry and believe they’ve done some amazing stuff. I reckon it should be played a lot more,” said one caller.

After host Tom London played the hit song on air and asked if people would like to hear it pumped out at their local News Caf(233)é, one woman responded: “God, no. It would irritate me intensely. I wouldn’t like to hear it anywhere.”

As the station tried frantically but unsuccessfully to get Hofmeyr on air to respond to the story, fans started calling in, insisting that Hofmeyr had enjoyed tremendous success, had a large and loyal following and did not give a hoot about whether or not his material featured on the News Caf(233)é music line-up.
