Kaduna – Police Inspector Loveday Amadi was on Wednesday night killed in a bomb explosion while he led a rescue team to save the lives of those shot by gunmen in Maiduguri.

An eyewitness said as soon as the police arrived the scene of the shoot out the gunmen escaped, leaving the victims in the pool of their blood. Police officers hauled the injured persons into their patrol vehicle and headed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

“But before they could get to the main road”, an eye witness who identified himself simply as Friday recalled, “We heard a loud explosion and the police van went up in flames and later we learnt that the Inspector who led the rescue team was killed. Other officers in the van were injured.”

Police Commissioner Michael Zuokomor said Amadi acted in the best capacity every police officer ought to have after receiving a distress call.

“Although we lost him and some of our men were injured, the police are proud of his bravery and dedication to duty.

“He could be likened to an angel who watched over the lives of men, and who will not spare anything, including his own life, to save others. That exactly is what the code of the force dictates,” Zuokomor explained.

He narrated to journalists that an explosive device was thrown at the police vehicle by the gunmen who went to the Gwonge suburb to attack people.

“On seeing that the police could be after them, they threw the device at the approaching police vehicle at a spot very close to the Gwonge cemetery and used, may be, a remote device to let the device explode.”

Zuokomor disclosed that the injured policemen have been discharged from hospital after being treated for minor injuries.

He urged members of the public to alert the police on suspicious movements or objects.

“We have lectured our men to be civil in their routine stop and check duty within the state capital and avoid causing unnecessary long queues. They are to check only cars that appear suspicious or persons of questionable character.”

The blast was the sixth in Maiduguri in the last three weeks of elections.

In Kaduna, residents are still apprehensive as they hurry about to buy essential items, even as troops are seen in strategic locations.

Tension rose on Thursday when soldiers in the busy Kaduna Central Market clashed with area boys fomenting trouble and scarring away business owners from their shops.

As news of the skirmish travelled round the city many residents took to their heels, unsure of what was coming.

But the situation was brought under control and normalcy returned to the market and its environs.

One other significant feature of the limited freedom lasting between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day is that thousands of people besiege banks to make withdrawals.

It is going to be a long weekend, as banks will not open again until Wednesday next week after the Governorship vote on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Governor Patrick Yakowa has urged the opposition parties to seek legal redress for their grievances rather than instigate revolt.

He gave the advice when he hosted the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-General Azubuike Ihejirika, who visited him to ascertain the carnage from the violence that erupted after the Presidential ballot.

Ihejirika said all hands must be on deck to restore peace and sanity all over the country, adding that more troops will be deployed in Kaduna to avoid a recurrence of the mayhem.
