Pretoria – Three home affairs officials were arrested in Pretoria on Thursday in connection with selling illegal passports to foreigners, a department spokesperson said.
Ronnie Mamoepa said one official was arrested in Arcadia and two in Soshanguve, and two more arrests were expected later on Thursday.
He said the operation began on Wednesday in Makhado, Limpopo, and it aimed to deal a “massive blow to what is thought to be a syndicate dealing in illegal sales of passports to mainly Pakistanis to facilitate their movement into South Africa and transit to foreign countries”.
Those arrested on Thursday during the operation that started at about 10:00, should appear in a Pretoria court soon on charges of fraud and corruption, Mamoepa said.
He said the co-operation between the department of home affairs anti-corruption unit and the police would continue to enable them to focus their “attention on service delivery as per (their) constitutional mandate”.
