I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

A Local Defence Unit (LDU) person shot dead on Tuesday last week in Moroto municipality planned to grab guns from his colleagues, an army officer has said.

Deo Akiiki, the UPDF 3rd division spokesperson, said on Saturday that investigations showed that Pte. Rifile Ariko tried to kill his colleagues.

“He tried to kill them so that he could grab guns and give them to awaiting rustlers,” Akiki said. He said he was gunned down by fellow soldiers at around midnight after firing several bullets at the group.

“We suspect there was a group hanging around to pick the firearms after the execution of the mission,” Akiki said.

He said guns in Karamoja were now scarce following the intense disarmament exercise in the region.

So far, the army has collected over 31,000 guns in 10 years of the exercise aimed at having a gun-free community.

Akiiki said the force was lucky that no soldier was killed during the shootout.

Ariko, a Karimojong, was attached to Singila army detachment in Moroto municipality.

He was among the 1,528 LDUs passed out recently at Olilim training camp in Katakwi district to reinforce the on-going disarmament.

“After failing in his mission, Ariko killed two cows in a nearby kraal in Acholi-Inn village,” Akiki said.

He attributed Ariko’s act to inadequate mastery of the military discipline the army had instilled into the group. Akiki advised the LDUs to protect the community’s property and wealth.
