South Africa: Ten Die in New Year’s Tavern Crush

WARNING: This is Version 1 of my old archive, so Photos will NOT work and many links will NOT work. But you can find articles by searching on the Titles. There is a lot of information in this archive. Use the SEARCH BAR at the top right. Prior to December 2012; I was a pro-Christian type of Conservative. I was unaware of the mass of Jewish lies in history, especially the lies regarding WW2 and Hitler. So in here you will find pro-Jewish and pro-Israel material. I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

Johannesburg – Ten people died in a horrific stampede at a New Year’s day celebration in Ipelegeng with North-West police calling for calm as it feared rising tensions within the community.

“We request the community to remain calm and not take the law into their own hands,” said a statement released by provincial police spokeswoman Captain Adele Myburgh.

“People must act responsibly in assisting the police with their investigation.”

Circumstances surrounding the incident and the ages of the deceased were still unknown by late afternoon.

Provincial Public Safety department spokesman Lesiba Kgwele said most of the deceased were underage but Myburgh disputed this.

She said it could not be confirmed as some of them had not been identified.

Police suspected they were between 18 and 25-years-old.

The stampede occurred at the entrance to the tavern’s dance area at 2:15am, said Myburgh.

The tavern was a popular nightspot in the township and had a dance floor and tuck shop adjoined to it.

Authorities could not confirm an SABC report that a fight among patrons led to the stampede.

A local pastor Enock Ramfate visited the tavern after the incident.

“The bodies were still there and were covered with their clothes…People were very angry,” he told Sapa.

“There is a sadness within the community and it has affected the people in a very serious way.”

He was unsure how the incident would affect the close-knit community.

“As time goes by we don’t know how the people will react. They are calm now but once the investigation is done, I don’t know what will happen.”

Ramfate urged religious leaders to pray for the bereaved families.

“We must all come together to support them”.

Ipelegeng Mayor Kenneth Pshipelo told Sapa the township was in a state of shock and disbelief.

“It’s not something that has occurred in this community before and people are taken aback.

“The situation is calm right now…but this is the first and worst incident we have ever had.”

A government delegation was expected to visit the affected families and pass on their condolences late on Saturday, he said.

The province’s Human Settlements MEC Desbo Mohono called for a thorough investigation.

“Someone should be held accountable for the incident which robbed families and the community of valuable lives,” he said.

“We are distraught and saddened by the deaths.”

Mohono sent his condolences to the families and said several questions needed to be answered.

These related to the cause of the stampede, possible overcrowding, underage patrons, and whether the tavern owner took precautionary steps to ensure patron safety in accordance with his license,

“Should this not be the case they should consider charging the owner of the tavern for negligence and pursuing profit at the expense of safety of his patrons,” he said.

A meeting with police, government officials, local leaders and political parties was expected to get underway at 5pm.
