Although officials of National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA have done much to dissuade drug couriers and barons from engaging in the illicit trade, yet, many youngsters are taking up the trade to make quick money.

Ninety five percent of all suspects arrested during the year affirmed that the quick cash involved in the business attracts them to the deal .

Three of such suspects nabbed recently at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos also disclosed to Daily Champion that they took to the trade to raise money to transform their respective families. In fact one of them informed our correspondent that he has too much responsibility to cater. for and yet there is no money to execute them. He argued that there is no other way to raise good money for his needs than to go into the risky business. ” Where is the job if you decide to work, where is the market that you want to do that has not been hijacked? I was left with no other choice than to find quick business that would assist me take care of my responsibilities.”

Some of the drug suspects include Udoh Christopher Ugochukwu, 38, Edionsehi Jude, 22, Obodo Kingsley and Okafor George Davidson, 34.

Spokesman of the agency Mr. Mitchel Ofoyeju said the command arrested 13 suspected drug traffickers within one month.

One of the suspects Christopher Ugochukwu Udoh who claimed to be hawking discs in Greece allegedly ingested 77 wraps of cocaine for a fee of 3,500 Euros. The suspect who was purportedly caught during the screening of Emirate passengers to Greece said he was desperate to make money. “I was desperate to get money. It was a do or die affair for me because I am the breadwinner of my family and the people that gave me the drug assured me that there would be no problem.”

Another suspect Edionsehi Jude was to board an Air France flight to Italy when he was arrested following scan result that tested positive for drug ingestion. The welder who had lived in Italy for seven years allegedly ingested 91 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.325kg . He would have been paid 2,000 Euros. According to Edionsehi who hails from Edo State, “I have been jobless and my wife is pregnant. I have so many responsibilities I don’t even know any other thing to do. I wont fold my hand to watch my family die of hunger”.

In his own defence Obodo Kingsley, a Lagos-based trader said peer pressure made him to smuggle drugs. He was alleged to have ingested 59 wraps of cocaine. He was arrested on his way from Brazil, aboard an Iberia flight. “I am a victim of bad friends. I was lured into drug trafficking. They promised me a job in Brazil but after two months they told me that drug trafficking was the only way out.” He hails from Imo State.

Okafor George Davidson a trader living in Benin Republic was also nabbed on his way from Brazil. The suspect who boarded a Qatar Airways flight ingested 67 wraps of cocaine. He is married with a child and hails from Anambra State. He too said that he was in the criminal act to make money.

However Chairman NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade has advised traffickers to ignore the assurances of their bosses assuring them that they would not be caught as a deceit. Describing it as a mere false hope to involve them in the illicit trade. The anti-drug agency boss gave the advice following a revelation from a drug mule that he was assured that nothing would happen to him. According to Giade, drug barons give such false hope to persuade prospective drug traffickers in the light of the crackdown on them by the agency. “Our arrests and seizures are a source of worry to drug barons who now give false hope to drug couriers so as to persuade them. The public should take note just as prospective drug mules must learn from the experience of those arrested” Giade cautioned.

While describing the latest stratagy as misleading, Giade assured that though desperate drug traffickers may fall prey to their evil plot,.”Our approach is to launch sustained attacks on major drug traffickers through tactical counter intelligence. This implies being on the alert and participating in constant training and re-training to guarantee a clear lead ahead of drug barons”

He noted that in the past three months, drug traffickers had devised several tricks in smuggling their drugs but warned that NDLEA had nipped such criminal moves on the bud.

Illicit drugs have uncovered drugs concealed inside bag handles, t-shirts, auto parts, foodstuff and even wigs as well as ingestion which is most prevalent.

The Airport Commander, Alhaji Hamza Umar confirmed the arrest of 13 suspected drug traffickers and a seizure of 44.755kg of cocaine last month.

Bulk of the drug intercepted was imported from Brazil while others were seized at the point of export” Hamza stated.
