Lagos/Umuahia – A human rights activist was murdered in the early hours of yesterday raising fears of possible violence ahead of the forthcoming general elections in Abia.
In Lagos, the Campaign for Democracy (CD), a pro-democracy civil group, yesterday deplored the murder of the chairman of South-east zone of the organisation, Mr. Chidi Nwosu and called on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, to urgently bring perpetrators to justice.
Comrade Chidi Nwosu, President of Human Rights, Justice and Peace Foundation (HRJPF) an Aba based human rights organisation was said to have been assassinated by yet to be identified gunmen at his country home in Ameke Abam in Arochukwu Local Govern-ment.
Wife of the deceased, Amaka, confirmed the dastardly act, saying her late husband had attended a wake keep and on his return he was trailed home by gun men, who shot and killed him instantly.
Nwosu, who was in his 40s, had been very critical of both Abia state and Federal Government as well as top politicians in in the state. He was said to have mended fences with Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State about five months ago and lauded the governor for liberating the state from the stranglehold of godfather and “mamacracy”
He was also said to have described Orji’s liberation from erstwhile godfather as the best thing to have happened to Abia and vowed to campaign for the governor’s second term ambition.
Nwosu was appointed the General Manager of Abia Rubber Limited after he joined government, a post he held till his gruesome murder.
Although no motive has been adduced for his killing, his community has in recent time been engulfed in political attritions following the jostle for elective positions in the forthcoming genral election.

In a statement yesterday, President of CD, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, who said she received news of Nwosu’s killing with rude shock, urged the IGP to speedily commence investigation into the murder.
According to her, the account given by wife of the deceased, Amaka, showed that Nwosu was murdered in his nativity, Amaeke, in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State shortly after returning home from the venue of a wake keep which he attended at about 12:48am yesterday.
The CD boss said “our hearts bleed that the civil rule that took the sweat and blood of many is being put into jeopardy by mindless acts.”
The statement further read: “The gunmen reportedly scaled the fence to gain access into his house just as he was entering. They thereafter locked his wife and daughter in the toilet before killing him.
