Harare – The officer-in-charge of a police station in Kariba has been arrested for allegedly loaning out three service rifles to a safari operator and a local authority.
This emerged as three men were arrested for allegedly breaking into Nkulumane Police Station and stealing two pistols and two rifles. In the first case, Dickson Masautso – who was based at Siakobvu Police Station in Kariba – allegedly loaned out three FN rifles to Safrique Safaris and Nyami Nyami Rural District Council.
One of the rifles is yet to be accounted for. Masautso (age not given), on Monday appeared before Chinhoyi magistrate Mr Funny Nyakudya facing theft charges. He was remanded in custody to September 17 after the State invoked Section 121 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act, which overrides the granting of bail in cases deemed to be of a serious nature.
The court had granted him US$100 bail coupled with stringent conditions. The State, however, said it could not allow Masautso to roam free when one rifle was still missing. Prosecutor Mr Herikiya Maromo said Masautso stole a rifle with serial number 9322 and 1 000 rounds of ammunition all worth about US$2 375.
The offence, the prosecutor said, arose after audit and station performance checks on September 3 this year. The checks showed that the rifle was last seen on July 8 but there were no indications that it was stolen, the State says. Investigations established that another FN rifle (serial number 9190) was issued to Nyami Nyami Rural District council last February while two other rifles were issued to Safrique Safaris on July 16.
Masautso is at Chinhoyi Remand Prison. On Monday, cops in Harare nabbed three suspected armed robbers who allegedly broke into Nkulumane Police Station in Bulawayo last month and stole two P1 pistols and two FN rifles.
Kudakwashe Maringehozi (24), Wakwetou Moyo (18) and Athanasius Mazhinje, all of Nketa 9, were arrested separately following a tip-off. Police have recovered the stolen guns and the suspects were yesterday still in custody. Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena said: “The three were arrested in connection with the unlawful entry into Nkulumane Police Station offices and theft of firearms.
“The crime was committed on the night of August 17.” The trio allegedly scaled a three-metre high security fence and broke into an office at the station. They forced open a gun cabinet and stole the guns, police said.
“The two pistols and two rifles were recovered in a small field opposite Kudakwashe Maringehozi’s home in Nketa 9,” said Snr Asst Comm Bvudzijena.
He said they were also investigating murder allegations against Maringehozi. The alleged murder occurred on August 23 in Newton West, Bulawayo, where Andrious Mangena (65) was killed with two bullets to the head. The trio will appear in court soon.
