Abuja – Former American Commander of the Coalition Ground Forces in Iraq, Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, is among accomplished security experts lined up as resource persons for the fist Nigerian Internal Security Summit being organized by the Ministry of Interior.
It is aimed at finding a lasting solution to the menace of kidnapping and other internal security challenges in the country especially in the south east.
Disclosing this in a statement, Captain Emmanuel Ihenacho said the summit will see the ministry brainstorming with stakeholders and security agencies on how to stem the incidence of kidnapping and other criminal activities in the country.
The statement made available to the Daily Champion yesterday said the stakeholders summit would discuss, among other things, critical issues bothering on internal security, saying in an era of general insecurity arising from increasing crime waves in the country, it has become imperative to mobilize relevant stakeholders to complement the efforts of the federal government at ensuring the safety of lives and properties.
The minister said the summit is essential because effective internal security measures have the inherent potential and tendencies of strengthening national unity and cohesion and encourage investment and accelerated development.
The statement said the summit which has the theme; The Challenges of Security Assurance in Contemporary Nigeria, will be a two-day event, beginning on September 16.
It is further aimed at providing a critical analysis of the causality of the state of relative insecurity in the country and the related challenges hampering effective security operations.
Participants at the event will be drawn from both public and private sector organisations, including the Ministry of Interior, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, representatives of state governments; local government chairmen, traditional rulers, Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS), Federal Fire Service (FFS); Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and licensed private security companies.
Other agencies involved in security matters are also billed to participate at the two-day summit. President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to attend the opening ceremony to declare it open.
Besides kidnapping, other issues listed for discussion at the summit include ethno-religious cum communal crises; boundary disputes and political and electioneering conflicts.
The statement added that the summit is to help participants understand how to think ahead and develop a path to attain the aims and objectives of the Ministry of Interior and also enable them to bring about the implementation of desired changes.
It added that a communiqué would be issued at the end of the summit with a view to addressing the formulation of a strategic vision for internal security, as well as create a development, monitoring and evaluation framework for strategic internal security plans.
Aside Lt. Gen. Sanchez, who would deliver a paper on; Developing an Integrated Approach Towards Solving the Menace of Kidnapping and Vandalism in Nigeria, the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Paul Dike and former Chief of General Staff, Admiral Mike Okhai Akhigbe(rtd), are also billed to attend.
Other speakers expected include Professor of Criminology, Mr. Etannibi Alemika , Professor Femi Odekunle, director of the centre for the study of corruption, University of Abuja, and Mr. Japh Nwosu who is a former permanent secretary in the Ministry of Interior.
