A fire at a retirement home near Johannesburg has left 18 people dead, emergency services say. Three residents were reported to be seriouly injured while others were treated for smoke inhalation on site.
The fire broke out Sunday night at the Pieter Wessels home for the elderly in Nigel, east of Johannesburg, a spokesman for Netcare 911 emergency service said.
Emergency services battled the blaze throughout the night and managed to rescue 84 residents, many of whom were wheelchair-bound. Survivors appeared confused as they sat waiting for assistance during the cold winter night. A security guard told local radio that he battled to rescue the residents.
“The sisters just called me and said there is fire on the premises, and I ran but I realised the fire was too strong. We then tried to take out the other patients,” the guard said.
“Maybe I saved eight or nine people but some of them were too big and I could not carry them,” he added.
By the morning, the fire was extinguished but its causes have not yet been determined.
Local churches welcomed many elderly left homeless after the incident, and appealed for the authorities to help take care of the 84 residents left homeless after the fire.
The flames gutted the building and left its wall charred.
