Harare – Warriors caretaker coach Norman Mapeza will get a chance to kick-start Zimbabwe’s preparations for the 2012 African Cup of Nations qualifiers when the senior team date Botswana in an international friendly in Selibe Phikwe next Wednesday.
Mapeza was on Tuesday given a fresh mandate by Zifa to continue heading the Warriors technical department on a caretaker basis as the association begins the hunt for a substantive mentor for the national team.
The former Monomotapa coach has been acting head coach of the Warriors following Sunday Chidzambwa’s departure for Free State Stars in the South Africa Premiership.
After guiding Zimbabwe past the final hurdle of the 2011 African Championships of Nations qualifiers in which the Warriors recorded a comprehensive 6-2 victory over Seychelles to secure their place at the tournament in Sudan, Mapeza now faces a much tougher task of leading his side in their opening Nations Cup qualifier against Liberia in Monrovia.
Zifa board member for competitions Benedict Moyo yesterday revealed that they had lined up a friendly between the Warriors and the in-form Zebras on August 4.
Moyo said they were also working on the finalisation of another international assignment for the Warriors on August 11, which will be the official Fifa date for international friendlies.
But with time running out before the Warriors fly out to Liberia for their Group A encounter, Mapeza has insisted on some warm-up matches and Moyo – a former Zimbabwe coach – acknowledged the need to assist the senior team with their preparations.
Mapeza yesterday named a squad of home-based Warriors for the Botswana trip but said he would blend the locals and the foreign-based contingent on the August 11 assignment.
The coach however, said he would today finalise on replacements for the quartet of Cuthbert Malajila, Benjamin Marere, Guthrie Zhokinyu and Daniel Veremu who had been initially included in the squad.
Moyo said Zifa had asked Mapeza to drop the Dynamos trio of Malajila, Marere and Zhokinyu and Gunners’ Veremu from the Botswana game because the quartet had still not heeded a Zifa call to testify in the on-going probe into allegations of match-fixing during the Warriors’ controversial tour of Asia in December last year.
“We have asked the coach to leave out those who have not heeded the invitation to come and testify in the inquiry which is of national interest.
“It is not like we are choosing a squad for Norman but it must noted that we have sent out more than three invitations for everyone who was part of the Warriors set-up to come and testify so that we conclude this important exercise without any further delay.
“It is only those who have not heeded the call who have been affected for the Botswana trip but those who testified and were selected by the coaches are actually part of the squad.
“We are using the locals for this game but on 11 August which is a Fifa date we are looking at having another game where we will assist the coach to bring in some of the foreign-based players he may want to look at and right now we have contacted such countries like Mozambique, Namibia, Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo with a view to either playing them here or away,” Moyo said.
The Zifa board member for competitions revealed that they had earlier contacted Zambia, Malawi and Togo for a possible friendly.
Zambia have however, already agreed to be in Kampala for a date against the Uganda Cranes on August 11, which will provide Chipolopolo’s new Italian coach Dario Bonetti with his first assignment.
Bonetti was unveiled as the new Zambian coach on Tuesday, with the Italian coming in to replace Frenchman Harvre Renard.
Togo and Malawi will also not be able to play the Warriors on August 11, as they will be engaged in their Group K Nations Cup qualifiers.
Botswana who lead the five-team Group K standings after winning their opening two games will face Malawi in their next assignment. While the Warriors are using next Wednesday’s match in Selibe Phikwe to prepare for the start of their Group A campaign, the Zebras will be hoping to continue fine-tuning a side that has so far been impressive in registering back to back 1-0 wins over Tunisia (away and Chad at home.
Although he is ready for his extended Warriors’ mandate, Mapeza said he was also hoping to meet Moyo and his Zifa committee to clarify some issues related to the senior team’s preparations and the nature of his tenure.
“It must be noted that the Nations Cup is a different game altogether and a much tougher assignment than the CHAN and I would need to finalise some other things with Zifa so that we know where to start.
“We need to properly plan for the game against Liberia. Although they have said I should continue as a caretaker coach, I also feel that as a technical team, including Joey Antipas and Baba Va Gari (Brenna Msiska) we need to also outline requirements and our programme and also get to hear what Zifa have to say.
“The Botswana game will also give us a chance to start building a new CHAN squad as you know we have lost a number of players who are now playing outside the country.
“We would want to play as many games as possible to prepare for both AFCON and CHAN but for now we will start with the local players for next week’s game,” Mapeza said.
Despite having to look for four replacements, Mapeza in picking his squad has also sought to reward current club form by handing the Motor Action pair of midfielder Allan Gahadzikwa and striker Charles Sibanda their first call-up.
Mapeza also recalled Monoz midfielder Charles Chiutsa while regular faces like Ashley Rambapanapasi, Edmore Sibanda, Gilbert Mapemba and Zephaniah Ngodzo were retained.
Next week’s game will be the first meeting between Zimbabwe and Botswana since October last year when Mthulisi Maphosa’s 88th minute strike gave the Warriors a 1-0 triumph in a Cosafa Senior Challenge Cup quarter-final at Barbourfields. The Warriors who have dominated their meetings with Botswana went on to win the Cosafa Senior Challenge Cup with a fine 3-1 triumph over Zambia at Rufaro.
