Tunis – From June 23 to 25, 2010, Tunisia is hosting the works of the 1 st Arab conference on “prospects of electricity generating and desalination of seawater using nuclear energy”, in Hammamet.
The event is organized by the Arab Atomic Energy Agency (AAEA), jointly with the ministerial electricity council stemming from the Arab League secretariat-general and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The meeting is held as part of Arab countries’ preparations to extend use of nuclear technologies to all sectors that serve sustainable development. During the meeting, an Arab strategy was adopted up to 2010, for the peaceful use of these technologies was submitted to the AAEA.
International experts from Canada and European countries are taking part in the event, including, Mr. Yury Sokolov, the IAEA deputy director-general. The meeting examines and discusses Arab national programs, as well as international experiences, to find best practices in the sector of building and using generators.
At the opening of the conference works, Mr. Refaat Chaabouni, Secretary of State in charge of Scientific Research, said that nuclear energy is, today, one of the main substitutes to fossil energy. In this regard, he stressed the strategic dimensions of the issues of energy and water, in the Arab countries.
He evoked the studies of profitability of promotion of the program of nuclear energy utilization in water desalination and generation of electricity which started in 2006, on the basis of conviction of the importance of these programs, particularly due to limits of fossil energy and the repercussions of its cost on foreign markets and on State budget resources.
In this context, a team of experts are preparing the basic components of the legislative system and control of nuclear activities. The Secretary of State voiced satisfaction at the phases made on the path of the implementation of the Arab strategy for the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
He also stressed Tunisia’s keenness to boost scientific, technical and economic co-operation with the sisterly and friendly countries in all sectors related to nuclear activities, in particular as part of IAEA and AAEA.
For his part, Mr. Sokolov said that this Arab conference provided an important opportunity to make the most of experiences, for the peaceful, responsible and sustainable use of this energy.
In this regard, he underlined the importance IAEA attaches to bolstering international co-operation, in the sectors of research and development, as part of programs resting on transparency, confidence and openness on the international community.
He also stressed the importance of fostering a large-scale awareness about the importance of atomic energy as one of the key factors for environment protection and a pillar for providing necessary energy and desalination of water, two elements of strategic importance in many countries in the world.
