I was at a shop today and I know the black Zimbabwean lady at the shop really well. I asked her where she lived, and she told me. I asked her if she was afraid that next week the black South Africans would kill her.
She told me she was quite afraid. She said she had heard about it, but it seems she heard about it through the newspapers and mass media. I asked her if black South Africans had told them to their faces they would kill them. She said that had not happened to her.
She does not live in a township and her view was that we’d see the violence more likely in the townships.
I spoke to her and tried to set her at ease by telling her that the message had spread around the world and the Govt would be embarrassed by murders happening in front of TV cameras and that most likely, things would not be so bad.
The ANC sits with a problem. They started this Xenophobia and genocide business on the quiet. President Zuma was, in my view behind the murders of Zimbabweans, Somalis and others in 2008. And I’m sure he and Julius Malema had some plans for xenophobia and maybe even farm attacks on white farmers this month.
However… I’m sure that Western Intelligence established that this was real… and that the Western Liberals have met with South Africa’s Govt and through normal diplomatic channels have put pressure on them to take a stand.
The irony and hypocrisy of this is that the ANC is behind the murders to be and now they have to try to pretend, while displaying their public face to the world, that they really are interested in law and order. So the ANC, the main criminal brains now also have to try and curb the very thing that they’ve been whispering to their black supporters to do.
No doubt, the ANC will drag their feet and will try to let their own black supporters off as easily as they can. They’ll have to pretend to be “outraged” and “concerned” and so forth in front of the world’s cameras.
The ANC is susceptible to bad publicity and I think that the threat of bad publicity and Western pressure are the only things that are causing the ANC to now “take action”. It will be hard to stop it completely, but, my guess is that perhaps, if the West did its job properly, the xenophobia of 2010 will be far more of a damp squib than the one of 2008 where the townships across South Africa went up in flames.
It will be interesting to see if Malema’s guys try to attack any white farmers.
Normally, lots of publicity is really very bad for covert ops and the ANC may have realised they’ll have to either abandon, or postpone or vastly reduce the scale of the murders they planned for next week.
Let’s see how things go next week.
