I witnessed some pandemonium yesterday. I was on my way home and as I turned off Beyers Naude drive (near Westpark Cemetary) I missed this accident very possibly by only a few seconds. It is hard to judge how soon after this accident I was on the scene, but I think I missed this accident by about 2 seconds. I say that because as I drove up behind this yellow emergency vehicle the people were all still in their cars.
What makes me think that the accident had just happened is because everyone was still sitting in their cars. As I came up behind the yellow and red emergency vehicle it hid the scene of the accident. I was watching as a little black girl in the back seat of the nice silver BMW kept opening the door of the car and just fleeing out into the road and one adult after another gave chase and caught her and brought her back. Then she would proceed to run away again and someone else would run after her to catch her.
If you will look closely at the photos of the silver BMW to the right of the emergency vehicle then you’ll see her. You’ll see a white woman gave chase and hugged her and then a black man (her father?) did the same.
Other people who were in the damaged cars also started getting out and walking around.
I was behind the emergency vehicle. I grabbed my cell phone and began taking photos when I saw the strange angle of the cars. Then I drove around the left and I saw the Roodepoort JMPD Police car which caused the whole catastrophe. I had been watching, prior to turning, a long funeral procession in John Adamson drive. It appears to me there was a long funeral procession of coloured people who were heading to West park cemetary. The Police car seems to have ploughed straight into the funeral procession cutting it in half.
As I drove around I managed to work my way through the backed up cars and I parked. I then walked around with my cell phone taking some photos for a minute or two thereafter. I did not speak to the people. I merely watched events unfolding. It was then that I noticed some coloured men and women who had been in the cars getting out and starting to talk and shout.
One coloured man with dark glasses and a stripped jersey, who owned one of the BMWs was really angry. He was walking up and down shouting at the black Policemen. He was seriously annoyed. He was saying things like, “I looked so nicely after car and who is now going to pay for the F*cken damage”. It was clearly evident from listening to the people that the focus of attention was on the orange and white JMPD Police car with 2 black Policemen. People were seriously annoyed with them questioning their driving and their style of driving and blaming them for everything that had transpired. Some harsh words were said to these Police officers whose car was damaged on all sides and it even had flat tyres. You will see the right back tyre of the Police car is flat.
I was listening to my MP3 so I heard nothing. But the accident must have occurred just a handful of seconds before I turned into the road behind these cars. And in the minute or so that I had to find some parking everyone started getting out of their damaged cars and walking around. A 3rd damaged BMW was parked behind my car. Then people started getting out of their cars at the back of the funeral procession looking around to figure out what the hell was going on at the front. All this happened after I had parked and this convinces me I just missed the accident by 2 or 3 seconds!!!
I can’t make sense of the position of the cars and how it all happened. But the general consensus was clearly that the Black Policemen were the cause of the whole accident. That the Police car ended up in the lane of the oncoming funeral procession is itself a mystery. Exactly what they did to get there I can’t say.
In one of the photos you’ll see another silver BMW with its bumper hanging on the ground – that was the BMW of the angry coloured man. If you look behind it you’ll see both lanes filled with the cars heading toward the cemetary.
My assessment of this was that the Police had ploughed into a funeral procession. It might even have been a funeral procession they were supposed to be escorting.
After listening to the anger for 2 or 3 minutes and having taken my photos I continued on home. Those coloured people were seriously annoyed I must tell you – and who can blame them? I would be just as annoyed.
