When I was in Orania I had a chance to observe the children a bit.
Orania has a population of 730 people of whom 200 are children.
You might think that in Orania you will find nothing but an old age home (although, Orania is also building a big retirement complex there). In fact, you will find quite a lot of young people there.
I saw young men doing manual labour, I saw young women with their own little businesses.
The children impressed me a lot. I saw some children walking home from their school dressed in their uniforms.
However, the kids are roped in to work as well.
I saw children playing down by the river late in the evening after dark. The children were interesting. I never saw an obese child or even an overweight child. The children I saw, from the youngsters up to teenagers were of slim build. They were happy and pleasant and well mannered.
The boys impressed me. The boys had decent hair cuts, none slouched about. They were active and doing things.
They say that the children do well in university when they leave. I can’t comment further on that. But what I saw was really nice. I saw happy children who didn’t seem to have attitude problems.
