Gambia: Drug Squad Officers, Others Visit Drug Hideouts

A high-powered team comprising top brass of the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDEA); representatives from sister security forces and agents from the UK Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) Wednesday visited three sites used as hideouts by alleged drug peddlers.

The team, led by the deputy director of the NDEA, Pateh Jallow started with visits to the Hol-Gam Company Limited in Kanifing and Baobab Island in Kuloro before proceeding to the warehouse in Bonto, where two tones of cocaine was uncovered in the recent drug bust. Bonto Warehouse. At the warehouse in Bonto, the team inspected a double-deck underground room, where the suspects allegedly kept the drugs before selling them.

The double-deck underground floor has different outlets, connecting each other from the centre of the main warehouse to other parts within the building. A 40-foot truck bearing the words Â’Health Care deliveryÂ’, a van and a line up of speedboat engines were also parked at the warehouse.

Baobab Island in Kuloro

The team also inspected another base by the suspects at Baobab Island in Kuloro. A highly sophisticated communication system was installed there. This communication gadget, according to the narcotic agents was used by the drug dealers to communicate with their counterparts in other parts of the world. It was discovered that the communication system could reach as far as China and can also be used to tap Internet communication as well as dodge the airport signal.

The team also visited Room Number 8 at the base, said to have been occupied by Carlos Sanchez, one of the suspects currently under custody. The public relations officer of the NDEA, Chief Inspector Ebrima Ceesay, disclosed that the sum of 210, 000 euros and some weapons were recovered in the said Room Number 8. He explained that the money was found under the cupboard while the weapons where kept behind the same cupboard.

He further disclosed that a VHS radio was recovered at the place. He said the suspects use the radio for their operations. The NDEA PRO pointed out that these devices enabled the suspects to communicate very smoothly and effectively. He opined that there may be even possible collaborators outside The Gambia whom the suspects communicated with. Yusupha Jatta a senior officer at the NDEA stated that the suspects are also involved in illicit weapons use.

At the Baobab Island, such equipments like diverse boats were found, which can carry six commandos and their guns when operating in water. At the end of the visit, the NDEA spokesman to thanked the UK SOCA team and all the other sister security forces for their collaboration and cooperation which led them to uncover such illicit drug business in the country. Meanwhile the public is urged to report any suspected drug case to the NDEA.
