Abuja – The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, CNPP, yesterday threatened to sue the Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mrs. Farida Waziri, if she fails to prosecute Speaker of House of Representatives, Mr Dimeji Bankole, over allegations of monumental fraud levelled at him.
The CNPP, which issued the threat at a press conference addressed by its National Secretary, Chief Willy Ezugwu, in Abuja said there was enough evidence in its possession to nail the embattled Speaker.
The umbrella of the registered political parties, which stormed the venue of the briefing with documents alleging sharp practices against the Speaker, called on Bankole to honourably resign because the Nigerian public, according to them, have lost confidence in his leadership.
According to him, “CNPP is at a loss why the EFCC is shielding the culprits, otherwise which section of EFCC Act is Mrs. Farida Waziri, Chairman of EFCC relying on, when she gave a lame excuse of reporting the matter of fraud to Mr. President, hence delaying the prosecution of the Speaker of the House, Hon. Dimeji Bankole and his co-travellers, a group her report had thoroughly indicted of embezzlement.
“CNPP calls on the Speaker to honourably resign and the Chairman of EFCC to forthwith prosecute the Speaker, Hon. Dimeji Bankole and his cohorts or she will meet us in court.”
Allegations against House leadership
Apart from the controversial N2.3 billion allegedly spent on the purchase of 380 Peugeot cars by the House leadership, the CNPP also unveiled other allegations of fraudulent activities against the House leaders in the purchase of photocopier machines, HP Desktop, Range Rover (treated), Mercedes Benz S-500, Samsung LN, which it alleged were all highly inflated against market price.
It also noted: “The controversial 380 Peugeot cars purchased at the cost of N2.3 billion, without any official discount, hence the delivery of 407 Comfort Automatic Peugeot against the top of range 407 ST Pack Sports Peugeot paid for, with a price differential between the two ranges of N1, 109, 175.00 per unit.
“The House also wasted huge public funds in the Power and other probes and ended up compromising itself, thus the speaker killed all the probes without commensurate results.
“For the purpose of brevity, we commenced the opening of the pandorax-box with the House of Representatives, not only because the monumental corruption in the House of Representatives is an eye sore, but that most Nigerians expected the House made up of younger elements to be more progressive, radical and anti-corrupt.
“This is not the case since the Ette-saga, more damning revelations continued unabated to consolidate under the watch of Speaker, Hon. Dimeji Bankole.”
On the new INEC chairman
On the newly appointed INEC chairman, it noted: “Whereas CNPP welcomes the nomination of Professor Attahiru Jega, a man of uncommon integrity, as chairman of INEC; however, we disapprove some of the names mentioned as members of the National and Resident Electoral Commissioners.
“The faux-pas of appointing some corrupt persons and retaining some Prof. Maurice Iwu’s men, had exposed the perfidy of President Goodluck Jonathan and indeed the National Assembly in rejecting the Uwais Report; which had provided an independent template of appointing INEC Chairman and key officers.”
