Mr Emil Touray, a representative of Gambia Action Network on Small Arms and Light Weapons (GANSA) has returned from a two-week training course on control Small Arms and Light Weapons.
The training which is part of a capacity building programme of the National Commissions for Small Arms (NatComs) and Civil Society Organisations in West Africa was attended by delegates from all ECOWAS countries. It was held in Ghana from the 17th – 28th May 2010.
According to Mr Touray, the course was meant to train personnel of the National Commissions on Small Arms and their partners in member states of ECOWAS on broad spectrum of issues relating to small arms to enhance their capacities to manage and control the proliferation of small arms and light weapons as well as consolidate peace in the sub-region.
He said that the foundation course introduced participants to the fundamental issues pertaining to small arms and light weapons (SALW) and prepared them to confront specific challenges.
He stated that they were trained on how to improve their awareness of the fundamental managerial and advocacy skills necessary for the establishment of National Commissions for Small Arms and Light Weapons.
Mr Touray pointed out that they were sensitized on the provisions of the ECOWAS convention on small arms and light weapons and the need for such provisions to be domesticated by the member countries of ECOWAS.
According to Touray, Participants were also trained on how to carry out sensitization programmes on these issues which are affecting the development of the sub-region.

- Demand and supply, Misuse of Small Arms and Light Weapons
- Small Arms and Light Weapons and post-conflict peace-building
- Evolution of Small Arms and Light Weapons control initiatives
- International legal and policy framework on Small Arms and Light Weapons
- Function and structure of NatComs
- Small Arms and Light Weapons National Survey
- Small Arms and Light Weapons and Gender
