Maputo – The Mozambican police have concluded that the blast which destroyed a shop in Beira last week, and damaged 23 others, was caused by explosives.
The police have thus ruled out the theories that a fault in the electrical system, or a gas cylinder catching fire, might have led to the blast.
According to a report in Tuesday’s issue of the independent daily “O Pais”, the police conclusion, announced in Beira on Monday, resulted from an investigation by a police team specialized in explosives and fires.
“We want to discover what kind of explosive was used”, the police spokesperson in Beira, Mateus Mazive, told reporters. “Data on the motive for this act and other people possibly involved will be divulged in due time. The specialists have collected vestiges of the blast in order to undertake further examinations that will determine the type of explosive used”.
Following the blast, which occurred in the small hours of 31 May, the police arrested two Indian citizens, Moidu Tharakal and Abbas Poochatel. They are the man who was renting the shop and his manager.
They are accused of removing merchandise from the room where the explosion occurred, shortly before the blast.
Mazive regretted that some Beira residents had gone to the press with information about the blast, rather than contacting the police. He feared this might compromise the investigation, and declared “We think the press is not the ideal channel for dealing with matters as sensitive as this”.
Mazive forgot that, according to all the surveys undertaken to date, the media enjoy a much higher standing, in the eyes of the public, than do the police.
