Harare – HARARE giants Dynamos turned back the hands of time to six years ago when they last won the Independence Cup by beating rivals Highlanders at a rain-soaked National Sports Stadium yesterday.
Dynamos — who refused to play their Premiership game against Gunners at Rufaro 24 hours earlier while Highlanders beat Black Mambas in Bulawayo — found the goals that guaranteed them the silverware through defender Guthrie Zhokinyu and chief striker Cuthbert Malajila.
Zhokinyu scored a penalty in the first half while Malajila put the game beyond doubt in injury time.
The last time Dynamos won the Independence Cup was in 2004 when they got the better of Highlanders 2-1.
Luke Masomere was the coach then and yesterday former Dynamos winger Simon Chuma was directing operations under the watchful eye of his boss Elvis Chiweshe.
Although he sat on the bench, Chiweshe let Chuma direct operations in a game in which Dynamos once again fielded their second string side.
Malajila was the only regular from the side that has been representing the country in the Champions League campaign. Chuma, who had been coaching the Dynamos juniors, has been elevated to assistant coach and took charge of his first game when DeMbare beat Gunners in the Uhuru Cup semi-final last Wednesday.
Referee Ruzive Ruzive awarded Dynamos the spot kick after Highlanders’ Lawson Nkomo handled inside the box.
Nkomo made the error as he attempted to clear a weak effort at goal from Dynamos midfielder Nicholas Alifandika and Zhokinyu stepped up to beat goalkeeper Ndodana Sibanda in the 35th minute.
Malajila — returning from a three-week absence due to an ankle injury — then sealed victory two minutes into injury time when he beat Gladmore Tembo before slotting the ball past Sibanda and sending the Dynamos fans into delirium.
The match however, failed to live up to its billing and this could largely be attributed to the decision by both sides to field their fringe players.
None of the players who featured for Bosso in their 2-1 league win over Black Mambas at Barbourfields the previous day played in yesterday’s final.
Dynamos also rested the majority of their first team save for Malajila who was recovering from an injury.
The pitch was rendered slippery by the rains that fell a few minutes before kick-off and this helped make control of the ball difficult for the players, especially in the early stages of the game.
The two teams failed to string any good passes together on the wet surface although Dynamos were the first to settle under the conditions with Dylan Chivandire hitting the upright in the fifth minute.
Chivandire got to the end of a pass from Alifandika and took his marker wide to the right, but with Sibanda beaten and the former Sundowns player starting to celebrate, the ball crashed against the post and rebounded into play. It was a close shave for Highlanders who survived another scare in the 11th minute when Malajila failed to hit the back of the net from the crowded box.
Murape whipped the ball into the six-yard box and Malajila tried to fire home, but the Bosso defence scrambled to get the ball away from danger.
In terms of possession, Dynamos had the lion’s share as they forced Highlanders to make crucial interceptions while Highlanders relied on sporadic raids.
Dynamos had shifted from the 4-5-1 formation they used against FC Lupopo to their traditional 4-4-2 with Chivandire and Malajila playing upfront.
Takunda Mafara’s rising shot saw Highlanders coming out of their shell in the 15th minute when his attempt flew over the bar, giving no problems for Washington Arubi.
Murape nearly gave his side the lead in the 26th minute when he made a good run, but skied his effort while Chivandire struck a weak shot towards Sibanda five minutes later.
Highlanders thought they had equalised in the 72nd minute when Chipo Tsodzo ghosted forward to beat Arubi but second assistant referee Bongani Gadzikwa raised his flag for offside.
Ruzive concurred in what was a close call that could have gone either way.
Arubi was shown yellow for shoving Mafara in the 74th minute in a challenge for the ball. Benjamin Marere then rose from the bench to lay an inviting pass that caught Bosso at sea.
The Bosso defence showed lack of co-ordination when Augustine Mbara sent in a ball that surprised Gladmore Tembo.
Arubi thrilled the crowd when he ball juggled with his head as the match gathered momentum in the last minutes.
Both teams started playing more entertaining football with Bosso looking for an equaliser but it was Malajila who ended their hopes of a late comeback.
Chuma was full of praise for his players and said the win showed that Dynamos had depth.
“It was a good game for us because we really wanted the cup and also wanted to improve the co-ordination of our team,” he said.
Chuma said the return of Malajila was vital for the team.
Highlanders coach Mohammed Fathy believes his charges had given it their best shot.
“We played well and I am happy for the players although I could not say the same for some decisions by the referee.
“Play is supposed to be exciting but sometimes this is spoiled,” he said.
Fathy said his team, unlike Dynamos, had no problems playing a league game and then featuring in the Uhuru final.
“Actually we have played too many games. First the semi-final, the league and this final. We are not complaining because the Independence Cup is very important for the country as well,” Fathy said.

l A youthful Bantu Rovers outfit yesterday beat an equally green Gunners side 3-1 in an exciting third-place play-off at White City Stadium.
First half goals by Danny “Deco” Phiri (eighth minute) and forceful striker Mkhululi Moyo (38th minute) frustrated the visitors with substitute Ngqabutho Ncube putting the icing on the cake in the 70th minute.
Premeirship champions Gunners got their consolation from Tongai Magwendere who converted from the spot after he was brought down inside the box byDumisani “Fazo” Ndlovu seven minutes before full time.
The game started off at a fast pace with Tshintsha Guluva bombarding the Gunners goal area left right and centre with man-of-the-match Mkhululi at the centre of every attack.
In the seventh minute, the gangling Mkhululi was brought down outside the box and Phiri made no mistake a minute later and fired a thunderbolt past a bemused Prosper Chigumba, between the goal posts for Gunners.
In the 38th minute, Mkhululi was rewarded for his relentless efforts with a beautiful header after receiving a cross from industrious Kudakwashe Mahachi.
For Bantu Rovers, Kevin Sibanda made a solo run from the centre and let off a screamer which was too hot for Chigumba to handle and Ncube capitalised on the fumble to slot the ball into an empty net.
Gunners, who came into the second half a rejuvenated side with attacks from Magwendere, Cliff Sekete and Ishmael Lawe were awarded a deserved penalty in the 82nd minute.
Magwendere pushed the ball from the left flank into the Bantu Rovers penalty box, but before he could unleash a shot towards goal mouth he was hacked down by Fazo, leaving referee Albert Mbuse with no option but to point to the spot.
The first half entirely belonged to Bantu Rovers with Phiri controlling the midfield and had it not been for Kelvin Moyo playing too deep instead of closely partnering Mkhululi, the home team could have scored more goals.
Senior Gunners player, Asani Nhongo was cautioned for unsporting language towards the referee in the 18th minute after Bantu Rovers won a free kick.
