Consumers won’t just see the 25 percent Eskom hike on electricity bills, but on price tags too.
“If they increase electricity costs, we have to pass it on to the consumer,” explained Hoya Hill Optics managing director Clifford Sher.
The Sandton company manufactures lenses and spends between R40 000 and R50 000 a month on electricity bills for the computers, lights, airconditioners and machinery that keep the factory going.
The 25 percent hike could see the business paying close to R62 500 a month.
Also in Sandton, engineering firm Hyflo pays about R11 000 in electricity bills each month, but isn’t that worried by the price hike, which will cost them between R2 500 and R2 750 extra a month.

The company replaced all its lighting with electronically starting fluorescent lamps, and more light switches were installed so that only certain parts of the factory are lit up.
