There is a lot of information in this archive. Use the SEARCH BAR at the top right. Prior to December 2012; I was a pro-Christian type of Conservative. I was unaware of the mass of Jewish lies in history, especially the lies regarding WW2 and Hitler. So in here you will find pro-Jewish and pro-Israel material. I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

[Lookee here… The real reason they are letting the prisoners go… is not because of overcrowding!! It is a new Govt policy… This will encourage criminals even more! I have said for a long time, we have a Crime-Loving, Criminal-Loving Govt, and here you can see it so clearly. Jan]

South Africa released more than 3 000 prisoners on Monday, saying they had been rehabilitated, but denied suggestions that officials were trying to ease prison overcrowding.

Analysts say some of South Africa’s prisons contain three times more prisoners than they were built for, leaving many short of air, space and bedding in an environment where violence and rape is widely said to be commonplace.

“I think the government has reacted to the pressure,” said researcher Amanda Dissel at the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation. “It’s going to have an immediate impact on the numbers but in the longer term it will have little effect.”

The 3 000 were among 7 214 young, elderly, women and disabled prisoners to be freed by this week. More releases will be staggered over the next 10 weeks.

All sentenced offenders – aside from those convicted of sexual, aggressive, drug, alcohol or firearm related crimes – will have their sentence reduced by a maximum of six months.

But Dissel said numbers would likely soon return to current levels, she said, adding longer term strategies were needed to cut the numbers.

Department of correctional services spokesperson Graham Abrahams said the releases had not been ordered to ease overcrowding. Instead, they were part of a new policy aimed at rehabilitating rather than simply punishing prisoners, he said.

“The emphasis is not on the issue of overcrowding at all,” he said. “It is on rehabilitation. If you look at the 61 women I saw released this morning, I felt they were ready to be rehabilitated.”

Most overcrowding was in parts of prisons set aside for those awaiting trial, he said. The releases would therefore have little impact on this, although the department was working with other government bodies to cut the backlog, he said.
