Two men died in a shootout when passing detectives interrupted them as they were robbing a pedestrian in Khayelitsha.
A third robber fled.
The man who was robbed was wounded in the thigh and is in hospital in a stable condition.
The two Khayelitsha detectives were driving along Maphongwana Street in Site C when they spotted the trio robbing another man at gunpoint on Sunday.
Police spokesperson Anneke van der Vyver said it appeared that the trio had taken the man’s wallet and when the man demanded it back, fired at him.
The detectives stopped their car and the trio fired at it, hitting the left front fender and passenger door. The police returned fire, fatally wounding two of the armed robbers.
