[I thought I’d throw this item in because I have heard stories of bestiality from Soweto… via the grapevine. In this case… the Police can’t prove that the dogs were sexually assaulted. Jan]

The 12 dogs kept in the veld by four schoolboys from Soweto, who claim to have had sex with them, do not exhibit the usual signs of sexual abuse, according to the SPCA.
“They are friendly and in fair condition,” said Johannesburg SPCA chief inspector Harry Lange. Unlike in most bestiality cases, where animals become withdrawn and scared of people, the dogs followed the youngsters around when police and the SPCA went to investigate the case, he said.
Meanwhile, the boys – none of whom attended school on Tuesday – spent the day with a social worker, who has been called in to work with them.
The case has shocked the boys’ parents
Two of the boys are 10 years old, one is 13 and the other 16. Three of them come from Meadowlands and one from the new Bramfischerville residential area in Soweto.
Police and the SPCA took statements from the boys.
The case has shocked the boys’ parents, one of whom claims that her 10-year-old son was coerced by his 16-year-old friend.
Superintendent Richard Luvhengo said the child was upset, while the other boys appeared scared or did not seem to comprehend fully what they had done.
He said it would appear that the boys initially used the dogs to hunt rabbits in the area.
The four, who have not been arrested, were questioned by police on Monday.
While police say they are investigating a case of bestiality, obtaining evidence to prove this can be a problem. The animal has to be tested for traces of semen within 12 hours of a sexual act. This is usually done by way of pap smears.
Department of Safety and Security statistics show that of the 71 cases of bestiality reported in South Africa in 1998, only half got to court, and 18 of those cases were withdrawn.
Two related incidents have been set in the past six months. Earlier this month, a man from Engcobo, KwaZulu-Natal, was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment for repeatedly having sex with a sheep.
And in July, a man from the Northern Province was sentenced to six months in jail for having sex with a goat. The goat died.
