Three men were arrested for allegedly beating a 40-year-old woman to death during a robbery at her home in Ngcobo, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.
“The woman and her husband ran a spaza shop at their home located in the suburb of Dalasile,” said Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela.
He said three men, between the ages of 19 and 25, went to the shop around 2pm on Wednesday, pretending to be customers.
“When the woman went to serve them, they produced a pick axe and an iron bar. They then asked her to give them money, or they would kill her.”
The woman screamed and her 50-year-old husband arrived to see what was happening.
“When her husband arrived, they began beating the woman with the pick axe and the iron bar… then they began assaulting the man.”
The three stole money and fled the scene.
“The woman was unconscious. Her husband who was still mobile alerted the police and called for an ambulance, but she died of her injuries while on the way to hospital.”
Fatyela said the three were arrested shortly after and police recovered the stolen money.
They would appear in court shortly, he said. – Sapa
