Three police officers have been arrested for corruption, bringing the number of officials arrested since last week to eight, Mpumalanga police said on Wednesday.
“Police are clearly not adhering to the Anti-Corruption Strategy, they are still accepting bribes and don’t know how police should behave,” said Captain Leonard Hlathi.
The three police officers were arrested at their station in Sundra, Delmas, where they had been monitored over a period of time.
“They demanded and accepted bribes from various members of the public, in exchange for not arresting suspects or illegal immigrants.”
The five others were arrested and charged with corruption of the same nature.
All eight appeared in the Delmas Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and were released on free bail.
“A word to all police officers, as we are approaching the 2010 Soccer World Cup, don’t forget that other countries are looking to us to provide safety… our image should not be dented… refrain from corruption,” Hlathi said. – Sapa
