Police have nabbed the suspected ringleader of a Soshanguve schoolgirl gang which allegedly terrorise and rob younger children of their pocket money.

The gang is believed to be responsible for a spate of attacks on young schoolchildren around the township and is thought to have been operating since late last year.

Police on Wednesday arrested the suspected ringleader moments after her gang allegedly attacked two pupils in Soshanguve’s Block H.

Police spokesperson, Captain Solly Marindi, said the girl was pointed out to police, who were patrolling the area, by a group of young children.

He said at least two of the children had been robbed by the gang of R57.

“When the girl was identified she was immediately arrested near DC Marivate Secondary School,” said Marindi.

He added that information given to the police revealed that the attacks had begun last year.

Describing the gang’s modus operandi, Marindi said the gang identified their target, which was usually younger and smaller than them, and when they attacked they threatened to beat up their victims unless they handed over their pocket money.

“We are now piecing together information to establish how many people have been attacked by this gang,” said Marindi, adding that more arrests were expected.

He said the girl, who was released into her parent’s custody, would appear in court soon on charges of robbery.
