I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

The owners of a Durban car import/export company are counting the cost of a fire that gutted the top floor of their city centre storage building on Wednesday, destroying 200 vehicles worth millions.

It is thought that the fire started on the fourth floor of the Jakes Auto Export building on the corners of Anton Lembede (Smith) and Roy streets.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but it is believed that electricians had been working in the building when the fire started.

Shards of glass plummeted to the streets below

The plumes of dense black smoke that billowed out of the building’s windows and from its roof could be seen from as far away as Pinetown.

Sporadic explosions rocked the building as cars within the structure were engulfed by flames – their petrol tanks and tyres bursting in the intense heat.

Shards of glass plummeted to the streets below as flames came through the windows.

The roof caved in as the fire moved across the fourth floor. Employees were seen rushing into the lower floors of the burning building and speeding out with as many cars as they could save. Ethekwini fire district commander Trevor Stevens said the blaze was contained to the fourth floor.

“We have been using the Bronto skylift to douse the fire from outside the building and we have had teams of firefighters battling the blaze from inside. We managed to secure the third floor and the ramp leading to the fourth floor so we didn’t think it would spread any further.”

Stevens added that several factors had influenced the fire’s rapid movement through the building.

“The cars had been parked very close together so there is not a lot of space to move up there. Most of them have petrol in their tanks, which exploded with the intense heat. Another factor is that there were several fuel storage tanks on the floor.”

Police Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said a docket of arson would be opened and investigated until the cause of the fire was established.

Mayor Obed Mlaba, seeing the towering columns of smoke, arrived at the scene to “see what was going on”.
