It took only 11 minutes for a gang of robbers to help themselves to hundreds of thousands of rands worth of luxury clothing and cosmetics in a daring attack on Irene Village Mall during the early hours of on Tuesday morning.
After cutting their way through a padlocked gate and racing through a boom entrance in two 4x4s, a Volvo and a VW Polo, the 14-man gang, armed with an assortment of weapons, took their time as they attacked specifically targeted stores.
The gang overpowered two guards stationed at the mall’s entrance at 4.30am, then forced the men at gunpoint to take them to Fabiani luxury men’s clothing store and Edgars Red Square perfume and cosmetics shop.
After breaking open the shop front windows and doors, the gunmen forced the guards to help them load their loot into their four vehicles.
Robbers, positioned in the parking lot to act as sentries for their accomplices inside the centre, opened fire on a Monitor Net security guard who, suspicious about what was happening, drove into the mall to investigate.
The unexpected interruption is believed to have prompted the robbers to end their attack, 10 minutes before police arrived.
It is the second time in four months that the mall has been attacked by a gang of heavily-armed robbers.
Police believe they may be the same gang.
“We strongly believe that this is the same gang that attacked the mall in October,” said Lyttelton police station commissioner, Director Andre Wiese.
He added that police were investigating whether the robbers could be linked to the recent attack on Southdowns Mall earlier this month.
During the attack on Southdowns Mall, robbers made off with luxury goods, worth more than R1 million, including highly-valuable Persian carpets.
In the first attack on Irene Mall in October, robbers who held up guards smashed their way into Lacoste, Fabiani, Silver Fox jewellery store and the restaurant, Karoo Cattle and Land.
In Tuesday’s shootout the gunmen managed to force the guard to surrender before they overpowered him and stole his firearm.
Wiese said although no arrests had been made, breakthroughs were expected soon as police followed up on a number of positive leads.
Irene Village Mall spokesperson, Elsabe van den Berg, confirmed that the robbers gained access to the centre after they cut open the entrance gates.
They had been locked for the night.
“The robbers came in at 4.28am and were out of the mall by 4.39am. The entire robbery took 11 minutes,” she said, adding that police arrived 10 minutes after the robbers had fled.
She said although they were shaken, none of the guards had been injured in the attack.
Van den Berg said the centre would improve security as it had done after the first attack.
