A suspected criminal high-flyer was killed in an apparent gang-related shooting in Pinelands.
Mujahid Daniels, 37, was shot several times in the body and head in the parking area of the City Lodge hotel on Sunday.
Daniels, an alleged leader of the Junior Mafia gang, had been acquitted on 11 charges, including four of murder and five of attempted murder in the Cape High Court last year.
He had been accused of having ordered the killings of Chinese nationals Chan Chun Su and Ping Hsuan Chu.
It is suspected that Su had been involved in shooting Daniels’s brother-in-law, Raqeeb Oaker, 13 times at the Taiwan City restaurant in Century City in 2002.
Oaker, who survived the shooting, was shot again three times by two men in Station Road, Observatory, outside the Barmooda nightclub on January 11. He survived that attack.
Police spokesperson Andre Traut said on Monday that a man in a blue Toyota Corolla drove into the City Lodge parking area at 9.35pm on Sunday and approached Daniels who had been visiting someone at the hotel.
Traut said the man then fired eight shots at Daniels, seven into his body and one in his head. He died at the scene.
Abandoning his vehicle, the man then demanded a security guard at the entrance hand over the remote access to the automated gate before fleeing. – Staff Writer
