A robbery suspect is in a stable condition and under police guard after suffering burns from electricity while trying to evade police on Saturday.

Cape Town Central police spokesperson Randall Stoffels said on Sunday the 30-year-old Khayelitsha man and another man allegedly robbed the African Hair Salon in Strand Street and tried to escape by fleeing across the train tracks at Cape Town station.

Stoffels said the suspect was arrested with burns to his hands, face and chest.

The suspect was in a stable condition in hospital.

Stoffels said police expected him to be released from hospital today (Monday).

But if he was not released, the charge of armed robbery would be faced in absentia in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court.

He said the suspect’s accomplice was still at large.

Two men entered the hair salon at 3pm on Saturday and produced appointment certificates, similar to those of the police, said Stoffels.

He said one of the suspects then threatened the shop owner at gunpoint and took R30 000.

The suspects fled on foot in the direction of the station where they were seen jumping from the bridge towards the trains.

Minutes later police on patrol were alerted to the robbery.

They found the suspect on the train tracks.

It is believed that he sustained burn wounds to his body, possibly from being shocked.

The police found about R10 000 on the injured suspect.
