President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe has arrived in Libya for a four-day
visit
Harere – President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe has arrived in Libya for a
four-day visit, state media reported Wednesday, as the country faced the
spectre of Western sanctions. State radio reported Mugabe’s arrival in
the north African country, whose leader Moamer Kadhafi is one of Mugabe’s
dwindling number of friends internationally.
The state-run Herald said Mugabe was accompanied by his wife Grace and
several cabinet ministers, and that Libya’s supply of fuel to Zimbabwe
would
be at the top of his discussions with Kadhafi. Kadhafi is a solid
supporter of Mugabe’s controversial land reforms, which have been closely
tied to political violence that has raged across Zimbabwe for 19 months.
Mugabe’s entourage includes the international trade minister, the mines
and energy minister and the head of the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe, the
Herald reported.
Mugabe left for Libya after his state of the nation address Tuesday in
which he described US efforts to impose sanctions on him and his top
aides as “repugnant” and “provocative”. The US Congress has passed a
bill, still to be signed into law, allowing the White House to impose
sanctions on Mugabe and any aides found to be behind political violence
in the country.
