I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

Former police superintendent Marius van der Westhuizen, charged in the Cape High Court with the murder of his own children, was a disciplined and responsible officer, and thorough in his work, the court heard on Monday.

Police Director, Petrus Roberts, who was Van der Westhuizen’s superior, testified about Van der Westhuizen last month, but was on Monday put under cross-examination by defence attorney Milton de la Harpe.

Roberts told the court: “Van der Westhuizen did his duties thoroughly, as expected of every police officer.”

Roberts was questioned about the night of March 2006, when he went to the Van der Westhuizen home, at the request of Van der Westhuizen’s wife, Charlotte.

He said the wife knocked on his door at about 8pm that night, and was with her parents.

The wife said Van der Westhuizen had locked them out of the house, and she was concerned for the safety of their children, who were in the house with him.

At the wife’s request, he went to the house to ensure that the children were safe.

Roberts said Van der Westhuizen was surprised at his visit, and asked Roberts if he could arrest and lock up his wife’s parents.

Roberts said there was obviously a domestic conflict in progress, and his function was to try to resolve it.

He said Van der Westhuizen was upset, but nevertheless offered Roberts an alcoholic drink.

Roberts said he accepted, but made it clear that the purpose of his visit was not to have a few drinks with him.

Roberts said he agreed to have one drink only, and no more.

Roberts said he explained the purpose of his visit, and searched Van der Westhuizen for weapons for their own safety.

Roberts added: “I told him I was there to help him, as well as his wife and family.”

Roberts said Van der Westhuizen took him to different rooms in the house so he could see that the children were safe.

De la Harpe said his instructions were that Van der Westhuizen in fact had more than one drink in Roberts’ presence.

Roberts replied: “That is not true. I would not allow him to have more than one drink, and thereby risk the possibility of him becoming aggressive.”

The case continues on Tuesday. – Sapa
