News – South Africa: Denosa call for action on killer virus

WARNING: This is Version 1 of my old archive, so Photos will NOT work and many links will NOT work. But you can find articles by searching on the Titles. There is a lot of information in this archive. Use the SEARCH BAR at the top right. Prior to December 2012; I was a pro-Christian type of Conservative. I was unaware of the mass of Jewish lies in history, especially the lies regarding WW2 and Hitler. So in here you will find pro-Jewish and pro-Israel material. I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) has called for urgent measures to prevent further transmission of the arenavirus that left four people dead in recent weeks.

A woman from Zambia, originally thought to have tick bite fever; the paramedic who accompanied her; and two staffers who worked at Morningside Medi-Clinic in Sandton, where she was treated, have died since September 14.

News from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases that a contract cleaner who had died at around the same time had in fact contracted the virus, spurred a worried Denosa to say: “The possibility exists that this virus could be lying dormant in the corridors of the hospital, and that exposes our members to serious occupational hazards.”

Denosa also said the hospital had been in denial that the cleaner, Maria Makubung, had died of the virus, but the hospital’s spokesperson, Melinda Pelser, said they had been told by health authorities that she was not a suspected case.

When Makubung died, the health department said it was believed that Mokubung had been ill for some time, and that tests would be conducted to determine the cause of death.

“We further call for the urgent implementation of necessary measures to combat this virus from continuing to infect people.”

Morningside reacted to the statement by saying: “The allegations by Denosa regarding infection control procedures at the Medi-Clinic, and the safety of this hospital, are medically ignorant, factually inaccurate and defamatory. We will be taking up this issue directly with Denosa.

“We have on a previous occasion drawn to Denosa’s attention the fact that a task team of local and international medical experts, delegated by the department of health, has visited this hospital and endorsed the infection control measures we have in place.

“The task team have said the hospital is safe for patients, visitors and medical procedures.”

Pelser said they did not know how Mokubung had contracted the virus as she had followed procedure by wearing protective clothing.

Meanwhile, the department of labour said it wanted employers to pay more attention to health and safety issues.
