Trade union Solidarity appealed to mining companies on Wednesday to impose stricter measures to control explosives at mines believed to be used in ATM bombings.

“Solidarity is of the opinion that the lack of control measures and corrupt practices in the industry has a significant influence on the availability of explosives to illicit trade.

“This ultimately leads to the increased occurrence of ATM [automated teller machine] bombings,” Solidarity spokesperson Reint Dykema said in a statement.

The Institute for Security Studies recently said corrupt mining officials are allegedly supplying criminals with explosives.

“We are very concerned because ATM bombings increased by 3 000 percent over the past three years,” said Dykema.

“Knowing that the mining industry is the main source of explosives places serious question marks on the effective control of this dangerous material by the industry.”

Dykema suggested that the inspector of mines pay unannounced visits to mines to investigate the regulation of explosives.

Solidarity also suggested that old sites at mines be sealed off to avoid access to explosives.

“The fight against ATM bombings will only be won if all the role-players in the industry take hands. The responsibility however begins with mining companies to safeguard their explosives,” said Dykema. – Sapa
