I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

Four of the 50 awaiting-trial prisoners who made a dash for freedom gave themselves up to police on Tuesday night after a jailbreak at the Westville prison.

A special task team of detectives from the Durban Serious and Violent Crime Unit worked throughout the night trying to arrest the suspects who escaped after overpowering a policeman and a prisoner warder.

The jailbreak is the biggest in the history of South Africa. Last month 16 prisoners awaiting trial for armed robbery escaped from Nongoma in Zululand. Only one has been rearrested.

Police said three of Tuesday’s escapees went to the Pinetown and Point police stations and handed themselves over to police while the fourth person remained in the police truck when the other prisoners jumped into taxis at Chesterville, Durban.

The three men told police investigators that they were forced to escape by a gang of prisoners.

The drama started just after 5pm when the awaiting trial prisoners returned to the Westville Prison after making a court appearance at the Pinetown magistrates court.

When the police truck arrived at the prison, a warder opened the back door and a gang of about eight prisoners attacked him and took his service pistol. The gang then drove out of the prison at high speed in the police truck. In Chesterville the gang abandoned the vehicle and jumped into minibus taxis.

Police said it appeared that the jail breakout was well organised in that the escapees had vehicles waiting to drive them away from the area.

Police on Tuesday night were having difficulty in identifying the escapees as the register was also taken during the breakout. Police were also unable to say what offences the men were facing.
