Robert Coutts and Rael Kahn’s bangles, designed to help the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s 46664 campaign’s fight against HIV and Aids, made their dazzling global debut this week.
More than 500 influential politicians, pop stars and business people, including Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey and Elton John, who attended Wednesday’s gala dinner for the former president’s 90th birthday celebrations in London were introduced to the 90 platinum, 90 24-carat gold, 466 18-carat gold and 46 664 silver bangles for the campaign.
One platinum bangle designed by Kahn, engraved with the numerals 46664 and set in diamonds, fetched about R5,4-million at the dinner’s auction.
Catri Velleman, marketing manager of Coutts Inc, said funds generated by the sale of the bangles would be pumped into the HIV and Aids prevention work of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
“It’s estimated that if 2,5-million bangles are sold worldwide over the next 10 years, this will contribute R1-billion to the foundation’s 46664 initiative to help eradicate HIV and Aids.”
The bangles are made and sourced locally, and aim to uplift communities infected and affected by HIV and Aids. Already, 41 people have been equipped with the skills to become jewellers, box makers and packagers. – Sheree Bega
