I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

A tip-off to Pretoria police has led to the smashing of a major housebreaking syndicate and the arrest of four men.

The syndicate, which has been operating in the suburbs of Centurion and Midrand for more than six months, specialised in stealing electronic equipment such as TVs, hi-fi systems and DVD players.

The arrests came after detectives from the Pretoria Housebreaking Task Team received information that a car, which had been stolen in the city centre earlier in the week, was being kept at a house in Mamelodi.

After staking out the house for several hours, police closed in and arrested a 27-year-old man.

An operator could control as many as five to 10 syndicates at a time

The man is believed to be the ringleader of the housebreaking syndicate.

Following the arrest, detectives went to another house in Mamelodi where they arrested three more alleged members of the syndicate.

Investigators said the gang was one of an estimated seven housebreaking syndicates operating out of Pretoria.

Police said the gangs targeted specific areas.

“The syndicates,” said police, “are usually controlled by an ‘operator’ who takes orders for certain items.”

An operator could control as many as five to 10 syndicates at a time.

When a special police task team is formed to focus on an area plagued by syndicates, the operator will send another syndicate with a different modus operandi, to the area to take the pressure off the syndicate being pursued.

Police Inspector Percy Morokane said the four arrests had led to the recovery of household goods worth nearly R100 000.

Among the goods recovered was electronic equipment such as DVD players, TVs, computers and hi-fi systems.

It had been established that this specific syndicate was wanted for a spate of robberies in the Midrand suburb of Noordwyk.

Anyone wishing to view the recovered items or provide information on housebreaking gangs can contact Captain Maluleke of the Pretoria Housebreaking and Theft Task Team on 082 850 8041.
