A 23-year-old Zimbabwean was arrested in Nigel for possession of explosives, Gauteng police said on Thursday.
Captain Petros Mabundla said the man was arrested around 10pm on Wednesday after police received a tip-off.
“We received information about a security guard working in the mine at Merrivale who had explosives.
“He was supposed to give it to a man who was going to buy it for R20 000,” said Mabundla.
He said that the man told police that a miner had given the explosives to him.
“He (the security guard) was supposed to then hand it over to the man who was going to buy it.
“The miner was underground so he has not yet been arrested, but he will be arrested as soon as he comes to the surface.”
Mabundla said that the Zimbabwean would appear in the Nigel magistrate’s court on Thursday. – Sapa
