A 23-year-old man was arrested after his accomplice committed suicide during a shootout with police in Motla in Hamanskraal on Thursday, Gauteng police said.
Inspector Mathews Nkoadi said police received a tip-off that members of an armed robbery gang was hiding in a shack in Hamanskraal.
The gang was suspected to be involved in a number of robberies in the Mabopane, Soshanguve and Garankuwa areas.
Police surrounded the shack and started to negotiate with the two men inside.
One of the men gave himself up but his accomplice, also 23, started shooting at police.
Police returned fire and a shootout ensued. When the gunman realised that the area was completely under police control, he turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.
Police arrested the first man and were searching for the remaining two members of the gang.
A Toyota Corolla, firearms and ammunition were recovered. The car was reported hijacked in Soshanguve on Tuesday. It belonged to a prominent Soshanguve priest.
The 23-year-old would appear before the Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of possession of illegal firearms, possession of ammunition and three counts of robbery, said Nkoadi. – Sapa
