A Mozambican who hijacked and raped a woman and her 14-year-old niece at the Grasmere Toll Plaza was sentenced to three life terms by the Pretoria High Court on Thursday.
Acting judge Chris Eksteen sentenced 23-year-old James Langa to three life terms and 34 years imprisonment on seven charges relating to the 2004 kidnapping, robbery and rape of the woman and her niece, who was 14 at the time.
Eksteen said the robbery had been well planned and it seemed there was a certain degree of conspiracy between Langa’s gang and the toll gate operators.
There were no toll booths open for cash payments and the couple were “unreasonably” forced to take the off-ramp.
The woman, her husband and her niece also testified in the trial of Ismail Cassim, who was in 2006 convicted and sentenced to three life terms for the brutal attack, and a year later in the Maputo High Court, where a second attacker, Luis Camillo, was sentenced to 17 years imprisonment.
The young woman, now 18, could not hold back the tears after Langa was sentenced. She said she would never be able to forgive him as he had ruined her life and she still battled with relationships as she no longer trusted men.
She and her aunt were, however, satisfied with the sentence.
The woman, her husband and niece were on their way to a holiday destination when they were directed onto a slipway at the Grasmere toll plaza and forced to stop by a gang of gun-wielding robbers.
The women were locked into the boot of their car while the man was told to run. The robbers then drove to a deserted spot where the older woman was raped in turn by two of the robbers with a gun pointed at her head. Her niece was also raped, despite the older woman’s pleas to spare her.
The half-naked women were afterwards told to run and were later found by police near the highway.
The judge said no words were sufficient to condemn the violent hijacking and rape of the two women.
He said he could find no mitigation in Langa’s favour, while there were many aggravating circumstances. The young teenager had been a virgin and was first indecently assaulted before Langa raped her so violently that she afterward had to be examined under anaesthesia. – Sapa
