Seven alleged gang members appeared in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Wednesday for the start of their trial amid heavy police presence.
The men, Thokozani Ntanzi, 21, Muhle Mkhize, 28, Sibongiseni Mchunu, 26, Sibongiseni Mkhize, 26, Vusimuzi Ndawonde, 31, Mziwandile Mkhize, 29, and Nkosikhona Mkhize, 24, face 17 counts.
They have been charged with three counts of murder, six counts of attempted murder, six counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and two counts of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
The state alleges the gang terrorised the small, quiet community of Greytown after embarking on a crime spree in September 2006.
On September 4, near the Nhlalakahle Men’s Hostel, Nathi Mzolo was shot dead in a botched robbery.
On September 13, the gang attacked Niyanth Maharaj and Monica Khumalo at the Buy-Rite Supermarket in Greytown.
Maharaj was assaulted and had R9 000 stolen from him, while Khumalo, a bystander who saw the robbery, was shot dead.
On September 10, Muziwandile Mbambo, a police officer stationed at Greytown, fell victim to the gang and had his firearm stolen.
He was severely assaulted in the attack.
Philex Masinga, Gizachen Mohamed, Nelson Masinga and Temesgen Mohamed, all tenants at a flat in Cooper street, Greytown, were attacked and robbed of cash, cellphones and jewellery on September 14.
During this time, neighbours who heard the commotion in the building called the police.
Police officers Nalesh Maharaj, Caroline Minaar, Moonsamy Moodley, Petrus Ngcobo and Sagren Moodley entered the building and the gang opened fire on them, wounding Moonsamy Moodley in his leg.
Three gang members were arrested after the shoot-out.
On September 17, Sabani Mbatha was shot dead at her home in Greytown, allegedly by gang members.
She had been a witness to the assault of Niyanth Maharaj and the murder of Monica Khumalo.
All seven men have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
