Police probing the alleged theft of aluminium from President Thabo Mbeki’s official residence in Pretoria are investigating whether it was indeed stolen.
While a case of theft is being investigated, detectives are also looking into the possibility that the aluminium may have been removed from the property by contracted workers.
National police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Vishnu Naidoo said that police officers are on 24-hour duty at Mbeki’s Mahlambandlopfu residence – situated at a residential complex in Pretoria – and are confident that security was not breached.
“We have opened up a case of theft, but we are also investigating whether or not it (aluminium) was stolen,” he said.
Afrikaans daily Beeld on Wednesday reported that burglars had pounced on Mbeki’s secure residence on the Bryntirion Estate at the weekend, where aluminium valued at between R20 000 and R30 000 was stolen.
Contractors had been working on the presidential house for the last few weeks, fitting in aluminium wire to serve as protection against lightning.
Naidoo said that construction was still under way at the residence and there were several contractors going in and out of the property.
According to the contractor who reported the theft, he was not allowed to go onto the property on Monday because he was told by police that Mbeki was at home.
It has since been established that Mbeki was out of the country at the time.
However, Ubani director Kevin Bredenkamp, whose company was supposed to have installed the aluminium cables, said he believed the theft could have been the work of employees contracted by other construction companies working at Mbeki’s house.
“There is a lot of construction taking place there and an opportunist, probably one of the guys working there, could have seen a gap and pounced on that,” Bredenkamp said.
He added that the company had since opened a case of theft.
on Wednesday, but could not say whether safety against further theft of their equipment was guaranteed.
He would not, however, answer any further questions, saying that his company had been told to refrain from speaking to the media about details of the theft.
“We had a meeting this morning with the police and the house manager in which we were requested to follow the guidelines not to communicate with the media,” he said.
The Presidency has refused to comment on the incident.
