MoneyWeb: Ranking South Africa’s biggest websites & also: ANC, DA & AfricanCrisis

WARNING: This is Version 1 of my old archive, so Photos will NOT work and many links will NOT work. But you can find articles by searching on the Titles. There is a lot of information in this archive. Use the SEARCH BAR at the top right. Prior to December 2012; I was a pro-Christian type of Conservative. I was unaware of the mass of Jewish lies in history, especially the lies regarding WW2 and Hitler. So in here you will find pro-Jewish and pro-Israel material. I was definitely WRONG about the Boeremag and Janusz Walus. They were for real.

[I was actually quite shocked by this article. Companies like MTN are huge. There must be something wrong with the list surely? Why aren’t banks like Nedbank and FNB mentioned? Surely they must have more than 400,000 visitors per month?

Well, what’s cool for me is AfricanCrisis. Look at my server statistics: AfricanCrisis Statistics for 2008 Last month we broke our record and had 134,000 visitors who read 350,000 pages.

So achieving 31% of the volumes of MTN, is not bad at all in my view. 99% of the work done on this website is being done by JoAn and myself, both of whom only work at it part time.

But when I look at the webstatistics and rankings on Alexa, of the ANC, the Democratic Alliance (official opposition), etc – it becomes really interesting.

According to Alexa, the ANC’s website ranks at 98,000 (for the last week) of all the websites in the world. According to Alexa, AfricanCrisis at this moment is ranked at 146,000 (for the last week) in the world (which is the highest ranking we’ve ever had). The DA (for the last week) is at over 1.7 million. Its average ranking (3 month average), is 347,000 – which AfricanCrisis still beats comfortably.

But where AfricanCrisis slaughters these political websites and has much more kick, is in terms of FOREIGNERS WHO VISIT IT. Only 18% of the ANC’s visitors are foreigners. Only 5% of the DA’s visitors are foreigners. Whereas over 70% of AfricanCrisis’s visitors are FOREIGN. AfricanCrisis is a website with global reach and readership with visitors from America, Canada, UK and most of Europe ranking near the top.

The entire design of AfricanCrisis from the beginning, as my strategy was to get news out TO THE WORLD, to counter the ANC’s propaganda and the Liberal dominance of news from Africa. I think in this regard, we’ve succeeded quite well. (And of course, as Whites flee South Africa in droves now – we will grow). The real punch of AfricanCrisis always, was aimed at bypassing the ANC’s monopoly of news coming from Africa and in hitting the ANC where it really hurts – IN ITS FOREIGN IMAGE. The ANC is heavily dependent on its fake facade to keep it going, and I wanted to kick the ANC in its nuts where it hurts the most. So ironically, despite its name, AfricanCrisis is probably one of the most global South African websites of all.

Afrikaners have always had a problem spreading their thoughts into the rest of the world. The insular nature of Afrikaners still remains. Die Beeld has virtually no web presence despite being a massive newspaper with excellent facts and great readership. They should learn a lesson from Huisgenoot, who then created the english version of their magazine, YOU, and who dominate the magazine market in SA and moved beyond just an Afrikaner readership. Another large Afrikaans newspaper, Rapport, only ranks at 582,000. South Africa’s english newspapers have a more potent web presence.

So AfricanCrisis is not doing too badly for a part time operation. It would be nice to turn it into a full-time operation at some time in the future. That is still far away because the revenue of the site is still far from what I would need.

My Strategy is as follows:
The site will become much more original with an enhanced flavour of its own to make it even more unique. I want to experiment for a time with more economic data and investment info and thoughts since that can help people a lot. I am actually trying to think up ways of approaching the whole investment problem. This week, I’ve begun an interesting “prediction experiment” (yes we need to revisit that too!) to do with stock prices in the USA. I have a very specific type of statistical analysis I’m trying. Stock and index prices are very variable. I want to do a mathematical exercise to predict stock movements for the next day based on the previous day’s prices. What is cool about my method is that I’ll be able to prove (or disprove), whether my methods have some merit. But a much bigger exercise, which I’ve laid the foundations for, is to attempt to analyse cycles. I have an experiment I want to run on it. So when I know more, I’ll show people what I’ve found.

I will again focus on greater automation of the site. By working on the automation and efficiency, I expect to be able to eventually match fully-blown newspapers and entire media organisations. Its just a rather laboriour and technical thing. I’m currently busy debugging and fixing some internal problems. I have a lot of technical things to iron out in the background before I can shut down the old site and can focus on enhancing this one. But seeing these statistics just adds more spring to my step. Ranking SA’s biggest websites
A question often asked is which South African sites attract the most visitors.

The local online industry is starting to mature with companies increasingly investing in their online presence. Many multi-million rand deals in the Internet arena also signal a more vibrant online market in South Africa.

It is well known that News24, IOL and Mweb have long dominated the online publishing environment, but many other websites – typically banking sites, email services and mobile portals – also attract large numbers of visitors each month.

This begs the question as to which websites are the largest in South Africa and attract the most unique monthly visitors.

A good starting place is always Alexa, an objective international measuring system, where one can get a list of the biggest SA websites. This measuring system is not entirely accurate, but it does give a good idea of which websites are popular among local visitors.

According to Alexa the top 10 local websites are News24, Standard Bank, Mweb, Absa, Gumtree, Webmail, IOL, MyBroadband, BidorBuy and Signmein.

It should be noted that the previous list excludes international websites such as Google.co.za, Facebook, Yahoo and YouTube, which actually dominate the top 10, but these are not local websites and are therefore not listed in this article.

The Alexa rankings give a fair reflection of the biggest websites in South Africa, but website statistics from services such as Nielsen Netratings and Google Analytics are far more accurate.

The main problem with actual website statistics is that audited stats are not always available for all websites. This is specifically true of websites not reliant on advertising revenue – typically the banks and mobile portals.

When it comes to audited website statistics, the Online Publishers Association (OPA) and the Website Association of South Africa (WASA) provide the most comprehensive lists.

According to audited statistics from the OPA and WASA, News24 leads the pack, followed by Independent Online, Hotmail (ZA), MSN (ZA), Webmail, MWEB, 24.com, MyBroadband, Health24 and Mail & Guardian Online.

This list, however, excludes banks. Bring them into play and the situation looks somewhat different.

The true list of biggest websites

By using all of the available statistics – and information supplied by the banks and mobile providers – one can construct a fairly accurate list of the biggest websites in South Africa.

News24 remains the top website in South Africa with over 1.76 Million unique monthly visitors – a significant lead over any of its competitors. It is followed by Absa with 1.25 Million unique visitors and IOL with 1.08 Million monthly visitors.

Hotmail ZA with 1.028 million visitors and MSN ZA with 966 847 visitors are two of the most visited local sites, with Standard Bank fitting in just below Hotmail ZA with just over a million unique visitors.

Some may view it as a surprise top 10 entry, but with 905 000 unique visitors and over 30 million page views a month the classifieds website Gumtree South Africa is definitely one of SA’s most visited online destinations.

The mobile providers are also doing well in the online space. The Vodacom4me website gets 455 000 unique visitors a month while around 425 000 people visit the MTN website every month.
