I saw an item on the TV news tonight where some African diplomats were interviewed. They were attending a function. So the reporter asked them about Zimbabwe.
The one diplomat from Lesotho and another one from Namibia engaged in a bit of a smooth-talking bit of word-play. Then I realised what this meant.
Africa has not, to date, exhibited any outrage regarding Zimbabwe. And the 14 SADC nations even less.
Underneath all this “Quiet Diplomacy” from Africa as a whole, lurks a nasty monster… These Blacks… will stand up for Mugabe. They will make excuses for him.
This is ominous. They are all engaging in a lot of smooth talk… because they’re talking money to Europe, but deep down, I sense they are more on Mugabe’s side than you can guess. But for diplomatic purposes… they are just quietly avoiding the issue… just quietly pretending it does not exist.
When they are forced into a corner, you’ll see them come up with all that legalistic hogwash that we’ve come to know so well from Mbeki and the ANC. I don’t trust the rest of Africa on the Zimbabwe issue!
